Time is Running out for Congressional Action on Caps and Cuts

Less than 30 days remain for Congress to take action on the therapy cap exceptions process. The short term, 2 month fix that Congress passed in last minute legislation on December 23, 2011 is set to expire on February 29, 2012. It is critical that Congress pass new legislation to extend the therapy cap exceptions process and to avoid the scheduled 27.4% cut in provider payments under the Medicare physician fee schedule.

At the end of 2011, Congress voted to create a group of conferees to pass bipartisan legislation to fix the long fought SGR problem and many other expiring provisions. The current 2 month fix gave the conferees time to come to an agreement on a longer term package.
While APTA is working tirelessly with congressional offices on the Hill to protect the profession and our patients from these impending cuts, we need your help.

If the House and Senate cannot come to an agreement on a package before February 29 the therapy cap will go into effect without an exceptions process on March 1, 2012. Furthermore, a scheduled 27.4% cut to provider payments under the Medicare physician fee schedule will be implemented.

Reinforce this message by contacting your legislators today!

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Call your Members of Congress today. Call Capitol switchboard (202-224-3121) and ask for your legislator’s office. Once you are in touch with the office, ask for the staffer that handles healthcare policy and:

Once you are in touch with the office, ask for the staffer that handles healthcare policy and:

Express your support for full repeal of the SGR and the therapy cap

Express that, at the very least, Congress must pass a two-year extension of the therapy cap exceptions process as proposed in the original House bill; which saves money and creates a path to reform the therapy benefit long-term

KEEP YOUR COLLEAGUES INFORMED – Request that your colleagues call their congressional representatives and sign up for APTA’s Grassroots Network, PTeam. PTeam will be the main source of information for legislative updates and breaking news on the effort to pass legislation to extend the therapy cap exceptions process and avoid the 27.4% cut.
Thanks for your help in getting the message through to Congress!
