Information for PTA's in New Jersey

What is a PTA?

The physical therapist assistant works under the direct on-site supervision of the physical therapist to carry out the established treatment plan and delegated physical therapy interventions, progressing patients within that plan, documenting patient progress and communicating with the supervising physical therapist regarding the progress of the patients in his or her care. Ultimate responsibility for the care of the patient rests with the physical therapist. New Jersey requires that Physical Therapist Assistants be licensed in order to practice physical therapy.

Education information   

The entry-level education for a PTA is an associates degree. There are 3 programs currently in NJ:

PTA Recognition of Advanced Proficiency
The goal of the Recognition Program is to recognize Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) who have achieved advanced proficiency through education, experience, leadership and as part of the PT/PTA team in a specified area of work - Musculoskeletal, Neuromuscular, Geriatric, Pediatric, Cardiovascular/Pulmonary, and/or Integumentary.


Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) are licensed in New Jersey and regulated by the NJ State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. Please refer to the New Jersey Administrative Code (i.e., regulations)  and physical therapy laws  for further details.
