Ethics and New Jersey Jurisprudence
 

Target Audience: Licensed PT/PTA
Instructional Level: Intermediate

This program fulfills the State of New Jersey, Board of Physical Therapy Examiners requirement for continuing education as it applies to physical therapy ethics and New Jersey jurisprudence. The portion of the program on ethics will emphasize scenario discussion and case resolution utilizing an ethical decision making framework. Participants will discuss cases and incorporate ethical decision-making models with clinical decision making. Case scenarios will be presented covering real issues that confront physical therapy professionals. The second portion of the course will discuss New Jersey Jurisprudence. In addition to presenting the new and most often questioned rules & regulations there will be time for questions to clarify how the Board of Physical Therapy Examiners interprets the rules & regulations in New Jersey.

From the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, Public Session Minutes, September 25, 2007 - "Beginning February 1, 2008, New Jersey licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants must complete a 2 hour course in jurisprudence concerning the New Jersey Physical Therapy Practice Act and a 2 hour course in ethics as part of the required thirty credit hours of continuing education. The Board clarified that the course may be taken separately or in a combined 4 hour course."
At the conclusion of this program the participants will earn 4 CE credits and be able to:

  • apply the principles of ethical decision making to an ethical situation presented;
  • determine the realm, individual process, and ethical situation in a problem presented;
  • distinguish between the approaches to ethical decision making;
  • develop a response to an ethical situation utilizing an ethical decision making model;
  • identify the new rules & regulations governing PT practice in New Jersey;
  • apply the rules & regulations to situations presented;
  • differentiate between the statute and the rules & regulations governing practice in New Jersey.
 
Incorporate Body Based Movement Methods to Enhance Your Physical Therapy Practice
 

Target Audience: Licensed PT/PTA
Instructional Level: Basic

Learn immediate and practical applications of body based movement methods that can be used in all clinical settings and patient populations including pediatrics, orthopedic, neurological, cardiopulmonary and acute care. Discuss the concept of neuroplasticity and review evidence that makes the use of body based methods pertinent to physical rehabilitation.

In a structured lab we will practice sensory-motor-attention skills and discuss the difference in the nervous system between developing a motor skill and repetitive exercises; design and implement a treatment program that incorporates concepts of sensory-motor-attention skills; and learn to apply self calming techniques to influence the autonomic nervous system.

Lecture material and practice will draw upon information from neuroscience, psychology, body based therapies including the Anat Baniel Method®, the Feldenkrais Method®, qigong, yoga and meditation.

At the conclusion of this program the participant will earn 4 CE credits and be able to:

  • define the concept of neuroplasticity and its implications for physical rehabilitation;
  • describe factors associated with enhancing neuroplastic changes of the nervous system through the use of body based movement methods;
  • design and implement a treatment program that incorporates techniques of sensory motor learning
  • apply self calming techniques to influence the autonomic nervous system;
  • improve body awareness for the development of self regulation.
 
LAB - Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring a mat and towel, your blood pressure cuff and tape measure.
 
Kinesiotaping as an Adjunct to Pediatric Therapy
 

Target Audience: Licensed PT/PTA
Instructional Level: Basic/Intermediate

This program will provide an overview of kinesiotaping principles as reviewed in the literature and techniques as they relate to pediatrics. Participants will practice at least 3 techniques on peers to learn kinesiotaping strategies and how they can be used to supplement traditional pediatric therapy techniques.  Examples of intervention with children with cerebral palsy, TBI, torticolis and hypotonia will be presented.

At the conclusion of this program the participant will earn 4 CE credits and be able to:

  • describe the underlying theory and basic principles of Kinesiotape® for the management of posture and movement problems in children;
  • demonstrate problem solving strategies to improve posture and movement utilizing at least 3 different Kinesiotaping® techniques in the upper extremity, lower extremity and trunk;
  • be able to apply techniques demonstrated to enhance carry over from treatment.
 
LAB - Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, bring a 2 inch roll of kinesiotape or $13 to purchase a roll of tape on site
 
Identification and Treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
 

Target Audience: Licensed PT/PTA
Instructional Level: Basic/Intermediate

This lecture and lab course will present an overview of the scientific theory relevant to the vestibular system as it pertains to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). The lecture will include a thorough review of the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system, as well as a discussion on the importance of thorough history taking, how to distinguish BPPV from various vestibular conditions, BPPV evidence-based recommendations and clinical interventions. The lab component will allow participants to practice evaluation techniques including the Dix Hallpike, and various treatment strategies including canalith repositioning maneuver for various types of BPPV.

At the conclusion of this program the participant will earn 4 CE credits and be able to:

  • perform a thorough history to appropriately screen patients with dizziness;
  • differentiate BPPV from other vestibular disorders;
  • discuss the anatomy and physiology of BPPV and the relevance of post treatment precautions
  • identify the signs and symptoms of BPPV;
  • demonstrate BPPV tests and differentiate between anterior, posterior and horizontal canal BPPV;
  • design a treatment plan for patients with BPPV (posterior, anterior, and horizontal canals);
  • demonstrate appropriate treatment interventions for patients with BPPV;
  • apply most effective strategies in treating various types of BPPV including canalith repositioning technique and liberatory maneuver.
