What is APTAnj? What is the difference between the "Association" and the "state licensing board"?

The American Physical Therapy Association of New Jersey (APTAnj), located in Robbinsville, NJ, is a member chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), which is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.

The American Physical Therapy Association of New Jersey (APTAnj) is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)6 not-for-profit, professional organization representing physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who live or work in the state of New Jersey, along with students who attend accredited PT/PTA programs, who are also members of the "national" APTA.

All members of the APTAnj Council of Directors (the chapter's "board"), including all officers and those in leadership positions, are volunteers.

APTAnj holds 2 chapter meetings each year (spring & fall) where its members convene to conduct association business, such as elections for chapter officers (i.e., Council of Directors), the chapter's Nominating Committee, and for delegates to the APTA House of Delegates.

Members of the APTA and its New Jersey chapter (APTAnj) pay annual dues to belong to the Association. For more information about APTA or to JOIN TODAY call (800) 999-APTA (2782), ext. 3395. You can also renew online.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) located in Alexandria, Virginia, along with its "state chapter" the American Physical Therapy Association of New Jersey (APTAnj) located in Robbinsville, NJ, is often referred to as the "Association". Both APTA and APTAnj are not-for-profit professional organizations that advocate for the physical therapy profession. Members of the Association are individual physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, as well as students in accredited PT and PTA programs that pay annual dues to join the Association.

The NJ State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (NJSBPTE), often referred to as the "state licensing board", protects consumers by regulating the physical therapy profession. The NJSBPTE is the governing body with authority to test and grant "PT" and "PTA" licenses for those who would like to work in New Jersey. The NJSBPTE can also revoke a PT or PTA license in this state.

Contact the NJSBPTE for information regarding testing, licensure, and fingerprinting and regulatory issues at 973-504-6455. Or write to: NJ State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, PO Box 45014, Newark, NJ 07101-8002.  Click here for a link to the NJSBPTE website. The NJSBPTE generally holds an open pubic meeting on the 4th Tuesday of each month at their office in Newark, NJ.

Consumers with a complaint regarding a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant should contact the NJSBPTE.  Please follow directions for the official complaint process and form located on the NSJBPTE website.
